Framingham, Massachusetts is probably not the first city (or even on the list of cities) that comes to mind when one thinks about biotech hubs, but what if it should be? Located just 20 miles outside of Boston and Cambridge, two of the most lauded biotech innovation destinations in the world, Framingham presents a unique opportunity and history.
Originally home to the Nipmuc, the area was colonized in 1700 and incorporated under the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Today it is considered part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area and ranks 14th in population across Massachusetts cities and commonwealths.
Through the centuries, Framingham has a rich history in anti-slavery and commercial activity. In the late 1800s, the Dennison Manufacturing Company (now Avery Dennison) brought manufacturing to the area. As Framingham evolved it was frequently referred to as “the largest town in the country” as it remained a municipality despite multiple attempts to convert it to a city.
Around 1970, the biotech industry started to blossom in Framingham as legislation offered a life science positive environment. In 1978, Biogen opened a location in Framingham, and since then the sector has grown to include companies of various sizes. There are now more than fifteen biotech companies in Framingham with continued growth via additions like Ensorcell.
When Framingham celebrated a tercentennial in 2000, it was still operating as a municipality. The municipality had tried two times before the tercentennial in 1993 and 1997 to become a city. Another attempt was made in 2013, before successfully becoming a designated city in 2018.
Beyond industry, Framingham has a lot to offer its residents. Whether young or old, single or coupled, with or without children, Framingham is suited to a variety of lifestyles. There are multiple housing formats and a vast range of educational and entertainment opportunities. It is considered a central location for shopping and is home to multiple businesses, retail establishments and restaurants with quick air, road and rail access within and outside of Massachusetts.
There is an active roster of activities that accommodate different lifestyles happening at all times of the year in Framingham. Whether it is celebrating the longevity of Framingham, hobbies, crafts, art, food, beverages, and more, there is something for everyone.
Framingham also has a unique blend of industry and traditional American legacy, which made the decision to locate Ensorcell here even more logical. We are thrilled to be here, contributing to the biotech sector locally, throughout Massachusetts, and within the United States.
